The Black Lion
In May 2016, a significant landmark reopened after undergoing refurbishment. This landmark is an impressive, curved-fronted building situated at a major road intersection, directly across from the Sacred Trinity Church. This building holds historical significance as it is the birthplace of the Showmen's Guild of Great Britain. In the past, this establishment was known for selling real ale, a type of beer brewed from traditional ingredients and left to mature in the cask from which it is served. However, it has since ceased to offer this beverage. Evidence of its ale-serving past can still be seen in the form of two unused handpulls that remain on the bar. The interior of the building features a pool table, which is located in a raised room to the left of the bar. This provides a recreational activity for visitors to enjoy. Additionally, the establishment is known for playing loud music from a jukebox, adding to the lively atmosphere. In summary, this refurbished, historically significant building offers a unique experience with its blend of history, music, and recreational activities. Despite no longer serving real ale, it remains a noteworthy location due to its imposing architecture and its position opposite the Sacred Trinity Church.
