"A Corker of a Show!"

If you find yourself looking for a happy place this Christmas holidays and wishing for a couple of hours or so of magical escapism then you will find it at the ‘White Christmas’ show, and ‘Wow!’ this is a ‘show’ in every sense of the word. The Curve’s deep and cavernous stage offers itself so openly to a full-on production like this one.

Based on the 1954 Paramount Pictures Film starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, and we have not one, but two, modern day ‘Dannys’ taking up to the mantle on this occasion to play the ex-serviceman turned double-act entertainers Wallace and Davis.

Actors, Danny Mac and Dan Burton are suitably slick and debonair and deliver perceptive performances that fits with the genre perfectly. Essential that Nikolai Foster has captured something so well. It is hard to identify whether that certain something is a thought or a feeling, because though outwardly White Christmas is nothing much more than Hollywood frivolousness there are narrative devices within the story-lines that conveys two story plots mostly… when the curtain raises, it's Christmas 1944 and General Waverley (Garry Robson) and his men are in a reflective mood and hopeful for the future - so firstly a continuing theme throughout is this nod back to the comradeship experience of WWII. Secondly, and having fast forwarded ten years, this is equally a story about match making in the love stakes.

Salutes too, go to the stunning singing and stage acting of Emma Williams as Betty Haynes; Monique Young as Judy Haynes and the depth of sound that reverberates from Wendy Mae Brown as Martha. Scenes at the Inn (in Vermont) which include Brown, Robson, along with young Georgia Stewart as Susan are the funniest scenes that are twinned with those story-line ironies that simply pulls on the heart strings. Beautiful!

The string of Irving Berlin numbers played by a live band deliver that jazz swing style, the musicians are extremely accomplished and along with full song and dance cast members, make this show extraordinary. Look out for the fabulous wardrobe exclusives, especially the blue satin and the costume dress in ‘Blue Skies’ and the black and white clothing detailing for ‘I Love a Piano’.

This is a musical production that would grace any great stage, anywhere, and Leicester has it in the bag this Christmas.
