"SPELEERS and HORNE are Incredible"

Rain Man is a combination of Charlie’s yearning for fast money, material things and his egotistic ways, and the gradual change in his disposition after he travels across US states alongside Raymond, his autistic older brother, whom he never knew existed until their fathers' passing.

UK theatre goers have been and will be irresistibly drawn to seeing this play. Expectations being high from critics and punters alike. There's one more tour date to follow Derby's, so, therefore, what’s to know? Firstly, that Ed Speleers (Charlie) and Mathew Horne (Raymond), under the superb direction of Jonathan O’Boyle, have studied character and arrive at such well considered performances which incorporate defined timings, physical work and crafted intonation.

The intention, straight from the script, is that the voices and interaction of other characters are communicating the drama elements of the story. They are there to oppose Charlie; ‘to pull him up’. And they serve to be empathetic/protective (in biased and unbiased ways) to Raymond's severe autism and because he has become institutionalised over many years. The sole purpose in the conjuring up of this story is to recognise the flashbacks of life events that these brothers share (and share alone), and their close-up tenderness that grows so emotionally.

The play has a real eighties vibe. The music sound quality and the stage lighting deserves a mention as it’s awesome, well done to the technical team!

No other Theatre Company takes cinematic greats to stage with repeated success as BKL Productions. In regard to Rain Man particularly, it’s a harder trick to pull off than one may think to attempt to imitate the Hoffman and Cruise pairing that was so crucial to the movie’s success and its continued relevance. The audiences' standing ovation made it evident that everyone was so chuffed with all that has been achieved here.
