In a small Balkan village, Tsena and her family are preparing for her first "gathering" - an occasion for young lads and lasses to meet and for romance (as well as arranged marriage) to bloom. Tsena, however, is not interested - much to the dismay of her grumpy parents and three elder brothers. She feels the village youths are shallow and is fascinated by "The Serpent" - an older man who lives in the mountains and who is reputed to terrorise the village on a regular basis. After the gathering dissolves The Serpent appears and courts Tsena who, to his surprise, agrees to elope with him...

A beautiful allegory written one hundred years ago, it raises incredibly current issues about race and the treatment of women and outsiders by society, as well as dealing with modern themes on the enviroment and the rape of nature for the advancement of "civilisation". This is a timeless and lavish love story, packed with bucolic idiom and lyrical phrasing.
