The Empire Palace, as it was originally known, was completed in 1885. Originally serving as a Variety Hall, it was subsequently modified in 1912 by the addition of, what was then, the latest cinema equipment. At Consett's peak, some four cinemas operated in the town, but with the downturn of admission in the early 1970's most were closed. The Empire was converted to a bingo hall, until Consett Urban District Council bought and converted it back to a cinema / theatre following the closure of the last remaining cinema in the town. Over time the quality and quantity of live entertainment has increased greatly, and following a full refurbishment in 2002/03 the Empire continues to grow and develop. The Empire seats 503, and usage figures have increased from some 28,000 per annum in 2001/02 to an expected 74,000 in 2006/07.

A licensed bar is available 45 minutes in advance of all evening shows. A full induction loop system is installed within the auditorium and foyer area for the hard of hearing. The downstairs area has full wheelchair access and facilities. Blue Badge holder parking is directly to the front of the building.
