"Bruce could become a cult"

Expect the unexpected with BRUCE. Think of puppets and you think of the Muppets, or Spitting Image, or Sooty, or Paul Zerdin (not that he's a puppet, of course) et al. But Bruce, here, is simply a piece of yellow foam with eyes and a slit for a mouth, and two white gloves for hands (a third one appears later in an hallucination scene) and suddenly Bruce is brought to life and takes us with him on an epic journey of love and revenge through space and beyond and back again. He is not, however, the only character involved in this show - but the puppeteers transform themselves vocally and physically into others along the way The strange thing about watching puppets and good puppeteers is that you actually begin to believe the puppet is real. This is down to the skill of the puppeteers, Tim Watts and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd, who between them create the voices and manipulate the head, mouth and hands. There is a cinematic quality to the piece achieved through lighting and sound and although the plot is not always easy to follow, the skill of the puppeteers is supreme - they work in harmony. Their ability to use voice, gesture, movement, to take Bruce and the audience on a journey is quite remarkable. There are subtleties and nuances, high-speed chases, adventures, space travel, pregnancies (his girlfriend, Debbie, makes the announcement) and a whole range of challenges for both men as they create, for the most part, a seamless and family-orientated piece of theatre. I wouldn't be surprised if Bruce doesn't, if he hasn't already, gathered cult status. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back next year with more adventures.
