Laugh in the Lounge to launch at Hook and Eye Bar, Stonehaven

Posted on 13/08/17 by Hook and Eye

The Hook and Eye Bar, Stonehaven is to host to a regular night of stand-up comedy in an intimate lounge on the last Saturday of the month beginning on Saturday the 26th of August at 8pm (Doors 7pm) – entry £5.

In an event to rival comedy nights taking place in big cities all over the UK, ‘Laugh in the Lounge,’ features a fantastic headliner, a better than brilliant support act, and an up-and-coming comedian all introduced by a gifted M.C. However, unlike other events taking place in big cities all over the UK, ‘Laugh in the Lounge’ showcases exceptional comedians with a strong connection to the Grampian region.

Scott Forbes, the Mad-dog of Montrose, has a “A rapid-fire, natural delivery that reminds me of young Billy Connolly.” (Evening Express) Scott first stepped onto the comedy stage 14 years ago in Aberdeen. He soon found success in several national comedy competitions and was once a Scottish Comedian of the Year finalist. Today, he hosts and headlines gigs all over Scotland and regularly MC’s at Sharky’s in Montrose.

Aberdonian Neil Skene is a highly skilled and much sought after after-dinner speaker. Neil brings a unique perspective to the world and to the stage by being the UK’s only blind comedian. Neil was a Scottish Comedian of the Year Semi-finalist and on top of his speaking engagement he regularly performs stand-up throughout the region. See www.neilskene.co.uk

Marc Christie is an absurd storyteller who has warmed the hearts of comedy audiences all over the country. He has worked as an extra for BBC comedy shorts and was recently the subject of a short documentary for BBC’s The Social. Marc runs two monthly comedy gigs in Aberdeen both of which are regularly packed to the rafters.

Wendy Jane Ivers is a hilarious and thought-provoking conversationalist. Wendy brings audiences on a trip into her current state of mind, and trusts that her spontaneous interactions and open-ended questions will take her and her audiences to places they’ve never been before. Having taken time out to work on an autobiographical archive, Wendy has recently returned to the stage after a near nine year hiatus, in which time she’s drastically matured as both a person and a performer. The regular event is a prelude to the Hook and Eye’s brand new, ‘North East Artists in Residence’ programme (NEAR), formally launching in the New Year. NEAR will support exceptional creators and talented performers of a variety of genres born, bred, or based in the region by providing them with professional development and performance opportunities and helping them secure audiences for shows.

Natasha Stevenson (photo above) proprietor of the Hook and Eye and patron of NEAR says, “It’s really important to support home grown and locally based artists at all stages in their careers. We already provide rehearsal space for The Community Beat, a collective of young musicians, on a Monday; we run an open mic music session on Fridays; and we showcase local bands and DJ’s on Saturdays. I love comedy and believe laughter is really important for people’s wellbeing. I recently became aware of the sheer amount of comedy talent that’s come out of this region and felt it was only right that I brought them to Stonehaven by adding a regular comedy night to our roster. By showcasing acts born, bred, or based here and who’re going down a storm all over the country, I hope it’ll encourage young people from Stonehaven and surrounding areas to consider taking up comedy. Having listened to the needs and ideas of a number of local artists I’m also looking forward to adding other art forms to our schedule and formally launching NEAR in the New Year.”

To support comedy in the region and find out if home grown or locally based acts really can cut it with the big boys purchase tickets now at the criminally low price of £5 from www.skiddle.com or from the Hook and Eye Bar.
