Tyrannical Nurse Ratched rules her ward in a mental hospital with a strict and unbending routine, unopposed by her patients, who remain cowed by mind-numbing medication and the threat of electric shock therapy. But her regime is disrupted by the arrival of McMurphy - the swaggering, fun-loving trickster with a devilish grin, who resolves to oppose her rules on behalf of his fellow inmates. His struggle is seen through the eyes of Chief Bromden, a seemingly mute patient who understands McMurphy's heroic attempt to battle with the powers that keep them imprisoned.

A devastatingly honest portrayal of the boundaries between sanity and madness.

"Freedom of conscience entails more dangers than authority and despotism" - Foucault

Zazu's Theatre Company is a young company dedicated to creating politically involving, 'psychological' theatre. 'Cuckoo's Nest' is one of a series of productions concerned with the alienation and injustices of everyday life including Albee's 'The Goat' and Berkoff/Kafka's 'The Trial'. 'Cuckoo' brings together actors, crew and practitioners from all over London, including Gul Davis whose award-winning novel 'A Lone Walk' details experiences of mental health institutions in the UK. Cuckoo is proud to be working with City & Hackney's Mind on their current project, raising money and awareness for local programmes supporting people with mental health issues.
