‘The Dark Earth and the Light Sky’ by Nick Dear.

‘The Dark Earth and the Light Sky’ is based on the real life of enigmatic poet Edward Thomas. Troubled with melancholy and scraping a living deep in the Hampshire countryside with his loving wife and children, he meets American poet Robert Frost in 1913 – and everything changes. As their friendship blossoms, Edward writes, emerging from his cocoon of self-doubt to become one of the most influential poets of the twentieth century. But just as Thomas is standing on the verge of success, war offers a drastically different path….

The play is a lyrical vision of the relationship between Eleanor Farjeon, Thomas and Frost. Playwright Nick Dear is perhaps best known for his esteemed adaptation of the National Theatre’s Frankenstein where Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller infamously swapped roles between Doctor Frankenstein and the Monster on successive nights.
