Written in 1996, Blue/Orange is a dark satire centred on a young black patient, Christopher, who is probably suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. His (junior) psychiatrist Bruce believes that Christopher needs further treatment whereas Bruce's senior, Robert, is determined that Christopher be released back into the community.

Since New Labour the bureaucracy of culture and abuse of political correctness has become apparent in the Health Service. Penhall, most recently known for creating the Mindhunter series on Netflix, signifies this in the arguments back and forth between the psychiatrists.

Blue/Orange is dark comedy at his best.
