When the British Army was first deployed to Northern Ireland in 1969 in support of the police in what was to become known as “The Troubles” the Army had its own name for it: “The Corporal’s War.” The restructuring of conventional soldiering meant that the traditional leaders, the officers, were sometimes redeployed in unconventional roles, often in plain clothes and undercover.

The year is 1978 and the 450 soldiers of 47 Field Regiment Royal Artillery have been stationed in the Grand Central Hotel, Belfast, for three months with only one more month to go before they complete their tour of duty and go back home.

Isolated Incident follows the fortunes of the regiment when a tit-for-tat sectarian killing is seen by one of the officers as an opportunity to break the rules and stop the cycle of violence. Something for which he was never trained at Sandhurst.
