Liz Lochhead’s bold, funny and irreverent re-telling of the tale of enmity between Elizabeth 1 of England and Mary Queen of Scots. Lochhead has described writing the play in 1987 as being “in the context of a debate about the then current state of affairs between Scotland and England”. It is a debate that has continued and intensified in the intervening years, making the play perhaps even more relevant today.
