Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down The award winning play by Richard Cameron. “It CAN be all right, deep down, even when things are all wrong” A woman’s body is found in a quarry, 8 years to the day since her son died in the same place. Three girls, strangers to each other, are bound by these tragic events through the heartless and destructive actions of one man. Richard Cameron’s lyrical, award winning and deeply affecting drama evokes the post-industrial landscape of the quarries and weirs of South Yorkshire in the late 1970’s through to the mid 1980’s. As their adult lives are haunted by the guilt of a shared childhood memory, the girls seek to break free from the ‘fallen’ and fight to ‘stand up’ on their own terms. Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down is a powerful portrait of lost innocence. Set in and around a small town where people know one another without being friends and told through interweaving and overlapping narratives, the play delicately explores the strength, perseverance and humour of Lynette (Lucie Howard)), Ruby (Hannah Keeley) and Jodie (Hayley Adams) as they struggle to overcome their damaged pasts and find an inner strength to build their future. It is directed by Rodney Pearson as part of the MA Theatre Directing programme at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. |
