True Heart Theatre will stage the London premiere of the Obie award-winning GOLDEN CHILD, written by multi-award-winning Asian-American playwright DAVID HENRY HWANG.

The most autobiographical of his plays, GOLDEN CHILD tells a gripping and entertaining tale of a Chinese family caught between traditional values and the modern world. It's a thought provoking exploration of the impact of cross -cultural contact between an English missionary and a Chinese businessman.

GOLDEN CHILD runs at the New Diorama Theatre 15 - 16 Triton Street, London, NW1 3BF - 2-12 October 2013 - and will be staged in English. (www.newdiorama.com)

In the face of challenges to cultural visibility for British East Asians, True Heart has been awarded a grant from ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND for this production and is generating much-needed opportunities to showcase the vitality and talent of our British East Asian theatre artists. Writer David Henry Hwang, best known for the West End success of M.Butterfly in the late 80s, has written many award-winning plays for Broadway since then – most recently Chinglish, and Yellow Face. GOLDEN CHILD was first performed off-Broadway at New York’s Public Theater, receiving a 1997 Obie Award for playwriting and moved onto Broadway, where it received three 1998 Tony Nominations, including Best New Play. GOLDEN CHILD recently enjoyed a hugely successful revival off-Broadway in New York’s Signature Theatre, as the launch production of a season of plays by David Henry Hwang. This production is its London premiere.

Awarded the Hodgkiss Award for emerging new directors, Ng Choon Ping will direct GOLDEN CHILD, following his success as assistant director of Chimerica (recently transferred to the West End) and text associate at Shakespeare’s Globe. Designer Moi Tran brings a play set in the early 1900s right into the 21st century. Veteran actress Jacqueline Chan leads a strong team of East Asian Talent.

True Heart Theatre was founded in 2006 to promote multicultural integration & diversity through the arts, the cultural heritage of the Chinese community in the UK, and visibility & participation in the arts for UK Chinese from grassroots to professional level.

“A drama with piquant comic overtones” Charles Isherwood, New York Times

"Hwang has gotten hold of a great subject, and he's a vigorous writer. GOLDEN CHILD has some of the crude storytelling energy of a potboiler or mini-series - a coarse narrative vitality” Washington Post
