What happens if at 7.30am on Monday morning you tell a professional writer they've got 24 hours to write a 20 minute play inspired by a starting block, such as 'Spying on someone.'

Then what happens when on Tuesday morning, 24 hours later, the end of that play, 'Raising a toast' for example, is handed to a second writer, who has until Wednesday morning to do the same? And then again, and then again?

What you have is a 'play relay' and that is exactly what RBL Theatre Company, the company who bought you the gloriously vibrant Twelfth Night in the Reading Minster of St Mary the Virgin Church, created for their original concept, sell out, launch event, Off the Block, last year and are thrilled to be repeating in May.

By 7.30am on Friday 24th May, four new short plays will have been written, in relay, by four exciting playwrights, including the winners of RBL's 2012 and 2013 Find A Reading Writer competition. These plays will be handed to four professional directors with credits from The RSC, Donmar Warehouse, Birmingham Rep and Old Vic, who will have two hours to plan their production before 9.30am, when sixteen professional actors will arrive, ready to learn, rehearse and make ready their plays before we, the audience, arrive at 7.30pm that evening.

Last year, RBL ran this improbable race and the result was a joyous celebration of all that makes live theatre so special, so full of adrenalin and so incredibly exciting. The event was so popular that Reading saw a much desired sight- a sold-out South Street - so this year they have upped the capacity, but we still urge you to book early to avoid catastrophic, soul-destroying disappointment.
