The town of Güllen has fallen on hard times. While the rest of the country is flourishing, the businesses of the town are going bankrupt and its workers are on the dole. Everybody's hopes reston Claire Zachanassian, the richest woman in the world, who happens to be a native of Güllen. And indeed, when the millionairess returns home after 40 years, she offers the town one billion - on one condition: someone has to kill her former lover who plunged her into disrepute and poverty. Outraged the citizens of Guellen reject her offer, but Claire is happy to wait and bide her time ...
