Shakespeare's classic tale of love and betrayal brought up to date in South London Written by William Shakespeare I Directed by Anthony Green

The CLF Art Cafe, The Bussey Building, Peckham.

25th January to 22nd February 2013 at 7.30pm

PRESS PERFORMANCE: Tuesday 29th January 2013 at 7.30pm

Following the Royal Court's celebrated residency at the venue in 2011 and 2012, Peckham's eminent new arts space will play host to Shakespeare's classic tragedy this winter as the former arms factory provides the backdrop for a new production performed by a cast of young actors.

Shakespeare's character, Othello the Moor, is a renowned mercenary soldier. This updated production sets the play within the booming yet mysterious world of western military security companies, the private armies of today. Against the backdrop of the cut-throat competition for military contracts, this production explores the more localized battle of Othello against his own demons as Iago, desperate for revenge, tragically destroys Othello's relationship with his precious Desdemona.

The Bussey Building, a former arms-manufacturing works and cricket bat factory, was partially converted into The CLF Art Cafe after community group Peckham Vision saved the building from demolition in 2009. Serving as evidence of the area's impressive industrial past, the building now plays host to artists, faith groups, and exhibition spaces, as well as many small businesses. In 2011 and 2012, The Royal Court brought Theatre Local the Bussey Building and they have now created a legacy theatre space at the venue.

The Othello Peckham Theatre company are a group of committed artists inspired by the spirit, values, excitement and creativity of The Royal Court's Theatre Local. They have come together with a common passion and goal: to bring a quality production of Shakespeare to Peckham.

Director Anthony Green has been a professional actor for 17 years and has during this time studied with some of the world's most inspiring acting teachers, most notably Ivana Chubbuck, in Los Angeles. As well as his acting work, he teaches actors and his clients include RADA graduates, RSC company members and complete beginners. This is his directorial debut.
