What really matters? Is it relative? Does it depend on where you are, or on who others are? Is it personal, or social? Lord Illingworth is Important. He has a job in parliament, and is on the verge of yet more importance, of being sent 'to lie abroad for his country' as an ambassador ('I heard that he was offered Vienna. But that may not be true'). He needs a secretary - an important function for an important man. Gerald Arbuthnot is not remotely important: young, energetic, and newly in love, ambitious beyond the small prospects offered by a provincial bank. But while enjoying all the triviality of an English country house party, Lord Illingworth meets Gerald and offers him importance, prospects, travel, and thus a position from which to propose to the young American with the startling opinions. Gerald is to be secretary to the Important Lord Illingworth. And his mother - who has struggled alone, against all the odds to bring him up - what will she think? Does it matter?

Last year we brought you An Ideal Husband in a ScripTease reading. This went on to full production, at the Electric and at Hatchlands Park. Come join us on 20th November for another Wilde evening at the Electric Cafe Bar - it may just be the beginning of something important!
