"YERMA" by Federico Garcia Lorca

Something Wicked Theatre bring us a major theatrical event: a production of one of Spain's literary masterpieces...in Spanish. Federico Garcia Lorca described the play as a 'tragic poem' and this production does great justice to this concept. "Yerma" means 'barren' and this is the story of a childless woman, living in rural Spain in the Thirties, who is angry and bewildered because her husband has no desire to have children. Eventually her obsession leads her to commit a horrendous crime...

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PRODUCTION IS IN SPANISH BUT CONTAINS A GREAT DEAL OF SONG AND MUSIC, MAKING THE PLAY EASY TO FOLLOW.

REVIEW

"The Vitality and The Passion"
by Maureen Mckarkiel for remotegoat

Federico García Lorca is widely regarded as one of the most talented writers of the last century. His work fizzes with the dry heat, smouldering passion and Arabic rhythms of his beloved birthplace Andalucía. Lorca's insightful portraits of women, characterised by thwarted desires and claustrophobic village life, is what gives many of his plays their enduring appeal. Yerma is a wonderful example of this.
Having studied Spanish literature at university, I have seen this play numerous times, many of them fine productions, but never in the original language. This interpretation by Something Wicked Theatre trumps the lot! The company captures the essence of the play in Spanish- no matter how good the translation there is always an element that is lost - and at the same time keeps it accessible to non-Spanish speakers.
Even as someone familiar with the piece I was reminded of how passionate and sensual Lorca's language is; something this production doesn't shy away from. Yerma's barrenness, which can be seen as a metaphor for her life in general, is contrasted with the fertility and vitality of all around her; from the fields where her husband and the other men in the village toil to the unbridled sensuality steaming in the southern Spanish heat.
The addition of Andalucían songs and music evoke this passionate atmosphere beautifully, conveying the story in a more dramatic way, which encourages understanding even amongst parts of the audience not familiar with Spanish. That the quality of the musicians and voices of cast members is superb provides a bonus for an audience already given a treat.
A brilliant production which should be an inspiration to other companies to be as adventurous.
