The Social Climber is an adaptation of Molière's rarely performed play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. The play's neglect is explained by the fact that the original was a comedie-ballet, written in collaboration with composer Jean-Baptiste Lully for King Louis XIV, whose successful production depends on musical resources beyond the means of most 21st century producers. This adaptation makes the play enjoyable for English-speaking audiences by re-ordering Molière's scenes within a more accessible, two-act structure.
