Permission to Cry by David Campton
A beautifully structured, heart-rending play about Julia Gibbon, an up-and-coming junior minister whose life is
thrown into turmoil by conflict between private and public morality. Her affair with Penelope Wright, a frank
and forthright journalist, very much a thorn-in-the-side of the Establishment, forces Julia to confront
insecurities and doubts she never knew she had. Penelope is killed in a rally and Julia's turmoil is, ironically,
made very public when she admits to herself that she was in love and allows her public façade to give way,
revealing a very intense and private grief. Told in a series of dreamlike flashbacks, this is a compassionate,
insightful play about love and politics in our hypocritical age.
