Known play Learn more about this play
Written by Oscar Wilde in 1883 in Paris for the American actress Mary Anderson (who turned the role down, thinking the subject matter unsuitable for audiences of the time), The Duchess of Padua was first staged at The Broadway Theatre in New York in January 1891.

Published in anthologies of the works of Oscar Wilde, this magnificent tragedy in blank verse is practically never performed professionally.

Director Rafe Beckley (Hans Christian Andersen's Dark Tales and Kitty and Damnation, Giant Olive Productions) presents the play simply and clearly, with the intention of allowing audiences to have access to a beautiful text which seems to have been largely forgotten.
