Live in the Fishwick & St Matthew’s area of Preston?

Love movies?

Then Cinema around the Corner needs you!

Get involved in an exciting new pop-up cinema taking place in the heart of the community from 4th - 8th December by emailing film@theyeatculture.org to join the mailing list and see how you can help, or simply joining us on Facebook and Twitter and getting the ball rolling by letting us know your all-time favourite film.
From Hollywood favourites to foreign-language gems, we want to know what you like and help share a passion for cinema across the community.

Building on the success of their Cinema on the Steps at the Harris Flights Festival in September, the events will see arts organisation They Eat Culture (TEC) - in collaboration with Friends of Fishwick & St Matthew’s –bring blockbusters, cult classics, family flicks and short films to St Matthew’s Mission on Acregate Lane, along with a great selection of stalls, workshops and activities. Co-programmed by local community groups and working with UCLan film production, interior design and architecture students, this will be a truly unique series of events.

But we want you to help us shape this event into something you’ll love - and that will really benefit the area – from choosing the films and showcasing local projects, to seed-planting and creative craft sessions.

Danny Walsh, Community Development Worker at Fishwick & St Matthew’s is enthusiastic about the events, saying that “Cinema around the Corner will bring a new and exciting splash of culture to an area that gets nothing normally and no access to the arts.”
“There used to be three cinemas in this area in the past, now there are none,” adds Bob Fletcher, Treasurer of Friends of Fishwick & St Matthew’s, “and the nearest one is two bus rides away. Also there are not many families in our area now who can afford the £30 - £40 cost of a visit to these new multiscreen cinemas of today.”

These events are part of TEC’s wider Cinema around the Corner initiative, a British Film Institute (BFI) and Big Local funded project focusing on co-programming and touring film across communities in Preston, around Lancashire, and maybe right on your very doorstep. The Big Local, an initiative supported by the Big Lottery Fund, sees 150 areas around England use at least £1m to make a lasting positive difference to their communities, and Fishwick & St Matthew’s has been selected as one such area.
